Identity is everything when it comes to creating an alter ego. Hip hop is full of egos born from the need to reinvent, change or escape something (usually from the darker side of life). An alias, as with any great super hero, is a way to be somebody else, be larger than life, fearless, defiant and untouchable. A way to protect your real identity. It can give you status, power and make you loved. Pick the right name and you can be unstoppable.
So, for instance if your name was… let’s say Tracy Lauren Marrow, and you grew up on the tough gun-tooting streets of south Los Angeles, it might’ve been a good idea to pen a new AKA ASAP. Tracey Lauren isn't going to provide the kind of bulletproof armour you want people to think you’re wearing. So enter stage right: Ice T.
This is a celebration of hip hop’s most unique individuals; a collection built on my own personal love for a super culture since the age of 12. From the 80s & 90s old skool pioneers, to the noughties and the teenies torch carriers. But... I want you to take a step back and celebrate the extraordinary people behind the masks.
